Rhode Island Historical Society Library

Rhode Island Historical Society Library - The reference collection of the Rhode Island Historical Society includes printed material (books, pamphlets, magazines), genealogical manuscript notes, microfilm, microfiche, and Internet access to genealogical Web sites such as AncestryPlus. Their genealogical collection is the third-largest in New England and attracts thousands of researchers from all over the world every year. Printed items exceed 150,000 volumes, including the pre-eminent collection of pre-1800 Rhode Island imprints. More specifically, the collection includes: microfilms of almost every newspaper published in Rhode Island from 1732 to the present, the Rhode Island Cemetery Database, a comprehensive collection of city directories, a complete set of federal censuses of Rhode Island (1790-1930), Rhode Island state censuses for 1865, 1875, and 1885, and a subscription to the AncestryPlus website.

Providence Public Library

The Providence Public Library maintains a special collection called "The Rhode Island Collection", which is useful for genealogical research. The Rhode Island Collection holdings include material and information about the State of Rhode Island and the City of Providence. The Collection includes the Rhode Island Index, an index to the full collection, a significant part of which is the index to the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin newspapers. Other holdings include maps; scrapbooks; atlases for the City of Providence; Providence City Directories 1827-current in microfilm, microfiche and hard copy; Sanborn maps; Historic American Buildings Survey of Rhode Island; city and town histories; and genealogy resources.
